As another school year comes to a close and with Summer around the corner, Parents are challenged with identifying different social activities for children to engage in during the break from school.

Socialization is extremely important. We, as human beings, are social beings. Socialization is especially important for children. Parents of young children (pre-school aged) and parents who home-school are often encouraged to have children engage in extracurricular activities specifically for the benefits of socialization.

While we often think of socialization as being important for teaching children how to socialize with one another, socialization has a range of benefits. It assists children with learning about sharing, teamwork, and empathy. Fostering empathy builds character and shapes a child's ability to understand & respect the world around them.

Socialization can also help improve language skills, especially for ESL (English as a second language) and children facing language barriers. Additionally, children with social skills are known to become more confident as they age. When children feel confident, they explore more and challenge themselves, ultimately building upon cognitive skills as well.

So as Summer approaches, be sure to find some activities for your child to engage in. Also, make sure the activities your child engage in speak to them and their likes/interests. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Boys & Girls Club

  • YMCA

  • Boys & GirlsScout

  • Summer Camps

  • Church Camps

  • Swimming

  • Cheerleading

  • Gymnastics

  • Sports (There are even specific sport camps like basketball camp for example)

Thanks for reading!
