"Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder." ~Rumi

From the moment our little ones are conceived, they begin communicating. With small movements and little kicks. When they are born, they cry and they babble. They even communicate non verbally. Eventually, they introduce language and verbal communication.

We often hear that the key to a successful marriage is communication. This is true of any relationship. You're children are never too young or too old for you to communicate with them. Parents--encourage your children to express themselves. Remind them that you are always there for them and they can come to you with anything. And don't just say this, mean it.

Ask your kids how they are doing, how was school, who their friends are. Take your kids on dates and talk to them. Learn about your kids--their likes and dislikes. TALK to your children. It is important that children grow up to understand the power of communication and the power of their voice. Their words matter. This is a lesson that they can first learn from you, the parent. Communicate openly and encourage your little ones to do the same.

TIPS FOR ENCOURAGING HEALTHY COMMUNICATION WITH CHILDREN:

  • Ask your child how their day went. Encourage them to be specific and use details. E.g. "What is one thing that you learned today"; "What was your favorite part of the day"?

  • At bedtime, ask your child to think of something they want to accomplish the next day and have them expand on that.

  • Ask your child about their dreams.

  • Have date-nights with your child.

  • Play games with your child that encourage healthy expression. (e.g. Jenga- each block they choose, they have to tell you something about themselves)

  • When your child is frustrated/upset, encourage them to vocalize how they are feeling and why. Talk them through it and remind them that emotions are normal and natural.
